An Analysis of The Snows of Kilimanjaro by Ernest Hemingway During his life, Ernest Hemingway has used his talent as a writer in many novels, nonfiction, and short stories, and today he is recognized to be maybe the best-known American writer of the twentieth century (Stories for Students 243). In his short stories Hemingway reveals his deepest and most enduring themes-death, writing, machismo, bravery, and the alienation of men in the modern world (Stories for Students 244). The Snows of Kilimanjaro is a proof of Hemingways artistic talent in which the author, by portraying the story of a writers life self-examination, reveals his own struggles in life, and makes the reading well perceived by the use of symbolism. Since then, he started to live a comfortable life, which finally lead to his moral disintegration. The narrator tells in the story how each day of not writing, of comfort, of being that which he despised, dulled his ability and softened his will to work so that, finally, he did not work at all (The Snows 44). In this way, the gangrene becomes a symbol of his failed aspiration, a concept which is discussed in Critical Survey of Short Fiction: Ãâ¦the gangrenous wound and the resultant decay parallels the decay of the writer who fails to use his ta lents (Farrell and Jacobs 1176). His physical death is caused by a scratch on his knee, which he has neglected in the same way he has failed to take care of his artistic work that led to the death of his soul. However, Harrys attitude toward writing describes Hemingways feelings about artistic creation. In a critical analysis, Greg Barnhisel claims that one of the demons which haunted Hemingway was the unfulfilled promise of a vastly talented writer (Stories for Students 251). In any society, the first thing that must be determined is from where the power to govern comes. No matter what form government takes, one thing remains constant; no person or group can govern without the will and consent of the people. This goes for despotic mad men and duly elected officers of a free electorate. If those who rule must command the will of those they lead, it must then follow that all executive power flows not from nobility, birthright, or wealth, but from the people themselves. It is this very principle, that any government was given authority and legitimacy from its subjects, that the United States government is based on, namely the Constitution. It is the shortest written Constitution of any major government in the world; However, if this is the document that all law in America is based then why is it so short? Because those founding fathers that had opposed centralized government wanted to have a document that expressly explained the duties, powers, and responsibilities of the new government. This truly was written as a rulebook for the government naming each and every rule that the people of the former colonies wanted the central government to abide by. Since the people wished this central government to have little power, the document is understandably short. In fact, the length of this document has only increased when it has been necessary to further curtail governmentââ¬â¢s power and increase civil liberties, prohibition being the only exception; however with its repeal this can be considered a wash. In juxtaposition, the Nevada State Constitution is 16,543 words long; almost four times as long as the U.S. Constitution. The Main Purpose of Case Studies and How to Effectively Hit the Target
Case studies generally have the following structure: it starts with a problem, then, outlines the various different potential solutions available. This is, then, followed by proven cases where one of the solutions discussed resulted in a company, organization or individual solving the problem outlined. The main purpose of case studies, therefore, is to find a real-life application of a theoretical concept or solution. Most of the time, problems are or can be solved theoretically. The actual implementation of the solution, however, can often be an unpredictable event. The world today is very volatile, and what is true today might not necessarily be true the next day. For any solution to be trusted, it is important to prove that it can be translated from the books or classroom to the field and that it can, then, work effectively when this happens. How to Effectively Hit the Target However, for the case study to be truly useful, one must select the right case for study. The first step when choosing a case is to consider the purpose. When determining the purpose, think about the learning points you might wish to illustrate in the case, the people who will read the case study, and how it will eventually be presented to them. The best case study will be one that will allow you to demonstrate the usefulness of the concept being passed across. Further, even with the right content, the tone, language, and style of the case study determine how well it is taken in. When writing or presenting the case study, approach it from a straightforward expression style, one that will emphasize on the most part of the case with respect to the idea being put forth. Currency In the modern dynamic and current world, the most useful information will be the one which is up to date. For instance, in a business environment where one needs to forecast the demand for products they are developing, they will require up to date information on consumer preferences to help them make the right decisions. As a student writing a case study, one of the most important factors to consider when choosing a case for the study is its currency. This does not mean, however, that old case studies are useless. The key is to know when the current case is appropriate, and when it might be useful to incorporate concepts from an old case. Complexity Most of the time, case study research involves one specific concept. Therefore, the complexity of the case chosen will determine how and whether the idea is passed across effectively. In situations where an appropriate case might be too complex, then, one might benefit from subdividing the case study into several different sections and choosing the most appropriate one. As a student, the case study is one of the more effective research techniques. We hope that with these tips, choosing and writing case studies will definitely be much easier.

Motivational Factors Toward Pursuing a Career in Special...
This study investigated factors which motivated individuals to initially pursue careers in special education, factors which contributed toward their plans to remain or leave the field, and their perceptions of school districts effective and ineffective recruitment and retention practices. The sample comprised of 15 individuals employed in public schools throughout north Texas who initially pursued careers in special education. Data were collected through the form of audio-recorded semi-structured telephone interviews. Empathy towards students, family, and opportunities to fill job vacancies were factors that participants cited the most for initially pursuing careers in special education. Furthermore, most of the interviewees reportedâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Prevalent variables identified as contributors to the exodus from the field include occupational stress, burnout (Botwinik, 2007; Greiner Smith, 2006), weak support by administrators, unreasonable caseloads, large class siz e, low salaries (Darling-Hammond, 2003), testing and accountability pressures (Tye OBrien, 2002), and ineffective in-service programs (Kaufhold, Alverez, Arnold, 2006; Plash Piotrowski, 2006). A study conducted by Brownell, Smith, McNellis, and Lenk (1994) investigated the contextual variables related to teacher attrition. Findings indicated that those teachers who decided to stay in the field of special education were more committed to teaching students with disabilities, had a higher sense of efficacy, felt more prepared by their pre-service and initial teaching experiences, and exhibited more effective coping strategies than those who decided to leave the field. Two international studies were identified which focused on the motivating factors of individuals initially pursuing careers as general educators (Barmby, 2006; Watt Richardson, 2007). The physical beginning of the Mexican-American war between the United States and Mexico began with a Mexican attack on American troops who were stationed on the southern border of Texas on April 25, 1846. The swift conclusion to the war took place as General Winfield Scott occupied the Mexican capitol city, Mexico City on September 14, 1847. Within a few months, the Treaty of Guadalupe was signed with Mexico recognizing the US annexation of Texas as well as Mexico succeeding from California and New Mexico. In 1836, after Mexico had won its independence from Spain, Texas rebelled against the government of Mexico. With assistance from the US, Texas was able to win its independence from Mexico. However, stubbornly the Mexican government refused to recognize the new Republic of Texas. This stubbornness also continued into the distant northern provinces of California and New Mexico that remained sparsely settled and had a Spanish speaking population of only 75,000 in 1840. 4 Mexican officials vowed to preserve their historic boundaries, ââ¬Å"so when the Texas constitution convention voted on July 4, 1845 to enter the American Union, Mexico broke off diplomatic relations with the Uni ted Statesâ⬠. 5 Breaking off of diplomatic relations could have been a direct cause of the Mexican-American War. Another direct cause of the Mexican-American war was the provoking done by the United States through annexing Texas as well as stationing troops on the southern border of Texas. The US annexation of Texas, by a joint congressional resolution had caused considerable political debate in the United States. 6 The Independent Republic of Texas had tried to join the United States for several years, yet was blocked by antislavery forces that feared several new slave states would be created from the Texas territory. Upon British interest in independent Texas, the administration of John Tyler began to take action as anti-British feeling was behind most of the expansionist policy statements of the United States. 8 Afterwards when James Polk took Presidency, he set in motion his plans to acquire Mexicoââ¬â¢s northern provinces. His plan involved sending down General Zachary Taylor and an American army to occupy the Rio Grande, which was the Republic of Texasââ¬â¢s claimed border from Mexico. Ulysses S. Grant, who was a young officer under Taylor was quoted ââ¬Å"We were sent to provoke a fight but it was essential that Mexico should commence itâ⬠. 9 When the armies finally clashed, Polk delivered his war message declaring Mexico ââ¬Å"has passed the boundary of the United States, has invaded our territory, and shed American blood upon the American soilâ⬠. 10 Very clearly, the annexation of Texas and provoking of confrontation near Mexicoââ¬â¢s border was a direct influence on the Mexican-American War. A final thought is that the greed of United States President James Polk forced Mexico to war in order to seize California and the Southwest. The acquisition of Texas fueled President Polkââ¬â¢s appetite to fulfill ââ¬Å"Manifest Destinyâ⬠with the possibility of acquiring all the Mexican lands between Texas and the Pacific Ocean. 11 Polk sent John Slidell to Mexico in December of 1845 in order to secure the Rio Grande boundary and to purchase California and New Mexico for $30 million dollars. Arguing that the annexation of Texas was illegal, the Mexican government refused Slidellââ¬â¢s offer expressing the purchase of New Mexico and California was not an option. 12 Understanding that the acquisition of these new provinces wasnââ¬â¢t going to take place diplomatically, Polk was willing to utilize the United States military forces if necessary. Polkââ¬â¢s hastiness in going to war with Mexico introduced free-state, slave-state controversy. Northerners opposed the war all together expressing that Polk didnââ¬â¢t have the United States best interests at heart. Many Southerners on the other hand were in favor of expansion and supported slavery. Overall Manifest Destiny was an idea implemented during this time period to justify the movement westward and the seizing of the southwest. President Polkââ¬â¢s greed for California and New Mexico definitely was a cause of the Mexican-American war. Ironically enough, these three causes of the Mexican-American war helped drive separation in the United States of America even leading to possible causes of the American Civil War. When General Winfield Scott occupied Mexico City bringing an end to the war and the Treaty of Guadalupe was signed, the United States was successful at gaining California, New Mexico as well as Texas. Critical Evaluation Through examination of the articles I found, it seems that pretty much all of the bases have been covered in terms of the problems proposed by new technology used in the placement and distribution of music. Most articles described the potential harmful effects of file sharing, being the loss of profits for artists and their record labels.As it turns out, though, the artists are not really suffering as much as originally perceived. The new network options that are available actually open up new avenues for fan contact and relationships that was not available before, and most artists are in fact psyched about the opportunity to massively spread their content over the web. Local musicians, who were originally used by record companies as examples to gain sympathy for their cause of cracking down on file haring, are in reality benefiting the most from this aspect of social networking.We have seen the rise of this issue, beginning with the original suit against Anapest by the Big Five record companies, and how these companies are using dated record companies that must change and adapt, and that the copyright laws in our country must once again be updated in order to keep up with the times. W e see other ways that musicians are now making their money from the services that already exist for legal digital distribution such as tunes, to other new technologies that have emerged in this age such as television and videotape advertising and bile rhinestones.Ultimately, it seems that the artists are going to do Just fine in this new digital era, and it is the record companies who seem to have the biggest problem with the shift in power. Surprisingly (or maybe not), I did not find one article that solely sympathized with the record executives. Every article that I found, including the ones that began by stating the case of the record labels and describing the threat that new technologies pose on them, ended up saying that their case against digital downloading was basically mute and that the copyright laws they use to fall back on may no longer be effective in this new age.Its kind of hard to sympathize with the record companies, En they are already the ones that hold the most legal and financial ground in the music business and they are essentially Just the middlemen between the artist and consumer. This era of file sharing and POP networking seems to be removing the need for a middleman, since fans are more directly in contact with and in control of their musical world than ever before.
